You know-just the right size for a quick tour before lunch. As it stands, the structure is at approximately 2500 square feet.
The original plan incorporated a living space of under 1500 square feet.
The Laurent House was one of Wright’s Usonian homes, or (more or less) homes for the common person/family. But just in case, I will offer that you should be prepared to spend an appreciable amount of time on the carport, learning about the history of the project, before entering the structure.įrom the time you enter the front door, you will find that this is a very nice tour which is appropriately paced. I don’t know if all docents present the tour in the same fashion. Your docent will meet you at the visitor’s center. It’s easy to miss on the first pass, as is the house itself. The driveway for the visitor’s center is right across the street from the driveway for Laurent House. The main entertaining area of the house and its accompanying view are quite well designed for an individual in a wheelchair. Mister Laurent was paralyzed from the waist down. I kind of feel like many of Wright’s works were among his “very favorites.” However, I did really enjoy this house.Īs you will read in any written reference to this structure, it was the only house Wright ever built for a person with a disability. Wright referred to Laurent House as being one of his very favorites. I have toured another home, and an auditorium in which I have also seen two performances. This was my third Frank Lloyd Wright tour. When I found out about Laurent House, I booked tickets immediately. I was researching things to do in the area. I planned a trip to Rockford to see family.
